Hair Loss

Studies show that losing up to 100-150 scalp hairs per day is normal but more will be defined as Alopecia which is Hair loss.
Human hair naturally grows in Four phases: anagen, catagen, telogen , and Ketogen.
Anagen is the active or growing phase. Catagen is a fairly short phase of the natural hair cycle during which hairs begin to break down. Telogen is the resting phase. The hairs that are shed daily are often in the resting or late phase in the hair cycle.
Normally, about 10% of the scalp hairs are in the resting or telogen phase at any time. These hairs are not growing and are getting prepared for cyclic shedding.

Causes of Hair loss:
  • Androgenic Alopecia: It is a genetic condition in which Androgenic hormones plays the main role; where the hair follicles are sensitive to the negative effects of these substances specially DHT. This results in miniaturization of hair; it grows weaker, thinner and shorter leading at the end to hair shedding.
  • Non-Androgenic Hair loss: This is due to Stress, nutritional changes, and hormonal changes like those in pregnancy, puberty, and menopause, thyroid diseases, iron deficiency anemia ,medications like chemotherapy, etc..
  • Use proper nutrition. Lack of vitamins, minerals and protein can cause hair loss. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and consume a balanced diet on a daily basis to prevent premature hair loss.
  • Deal with stresses in your life. The trauma of stressful situations can cause hair loss. Learn how to use coping strategies to manage and relieve stress
  • Loosen up your hair. Hairstyles such as ponytails, braids and artificial hairstyles can cause baldness by the constant pulling and tugging of your hair follicles. Look for more relaxed styles when possible.
  • Change the method you use to style your hair. Perms and other chemicals can alter the hairs structure and cause breakage and permanent damage. Blow dryers, curling irons and other heating products can cause more damage since they are used more often.
  • Read prescription medication side effects. Before taking any new medications read the various side effects associated with it. When hair loss is listed ask your doctor about an alternative medicine that could be taken or a way to reduce your chances.
  • Keep regularly scheduled doctors appointments. Many health conditions can cause changes in hormonal balances. Visiting a doctor can make sure any illnesses and conditions that develop are treated before they cause hair loss.
